What should you know about premise liability?

On Behalf of | Aug 3, 2017 | Firm News, Personal Injury Claims |

Connecticut business owners have to maintain their properties well and always stay vigilant. If you don’t, you could end up with customers injuring themselves while on your property. In turn, that can lead to a premise liability case.

Forbes published an article highlighting the dangerous situations that people can get into because of issues relating to premise liability. For example, any scenario where someone gets injured on a business owner’s property is nightmarish for the owner because they can be held liable. It doesn’t matter how someone is injured. They could hurt themselves slipping on the sidewalk in front of your business, trip over poorly-maintained stairs, or even slip on a puddle that wasn’t properly warned for. After the accident, you’re the person considered responsible and you will have to deal with the aftermath.

You are considered responsible for every person who walks onto your business property, even if you don’t own the property itself. Landlords can also be held accountable in certain cases, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t also be considered responsible for accidents. Protection extends to your customers, visitors on the property, professionals who come to maintain property or equipment on it, and even – to a degree – trespassers.

Premise liability cases clearly cover a wide range of potential accidents, situations, and injuries. While this isn’t meant to be taken as legal advice, it’s undeniable that you may benefit from seeking the counsel of an attorney if you find yourself tangled up in the fallout of someone’s accident on your property.
