Car crash injuries are often very serious

On Behalf of | Jun 29, 2017 | Blog, Firm News |

The effects of a car crash can range from only property damage up to life-ending injuries. When a car slams into you, there are many factors that might impact the type of injury you suffer.

The speed of both vehicles, the type of collision, seat belt usage and a host of other factors all come into the picture. After the crash, you should evaluate yourself to determine if you are injured. In many cases, an evaluation by a doctor would be appropriate, even if you don’t feel like there is anything seriously wrong.

Not all injuries are immediately evident

You might not realize that you are injured while you are still at the scene of the accident. Some injuries, such as whiplash or a brain injury, might not come with immediate symptoms. Instead, you might start to notice pain or stiffness a few days after the accident. If you do start to notice any symptoms that you might have a hidden injury, you should head to the doctor, even if it is weeks after the crash.

Your entire body can be affected

A car crash jolts your entire body. This leaves room for any area of your body to suffer an injury. Some people think that only body parts that get hit or crushed will be injured. This isn’t the case at all. For example:

–A brain injury can occur just because of the violent motion of your head in the crash.

–A spinal cord injury can occur because of the spine moving in an unnatural manner.

–Whiplash can happen if the head is flung in a way that puts stress on the neck.

–Internal injuries can also occur, which might be the case if the crash was violent.

Injuries range from minor to severe

Some injuries are minor, such as small bruises and scrapes. Other injuries are more severe. Broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries could mean that you need considerable medical care. In some cases, these injuries will mean that you have to take a leave of absence from your job or that you won’t be able to work again.

The thought of not being able to earn an income might be frightening, but you have to think of your health. If you do have a severe injury, it’s strongly recommended to consider seeking compensation to cover expenses related to the crash and loss of income while you heal.
