Fall driving safety tips: Do you know what to do?

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2018 | Firm News |

As one of our Connecticut readers, you know that the fall season is one of the most enjoyable times of the year. There’s something about the cooler weather and changing of the leaves that can put a smile on your face.

As hot summer temperatures give way to the fall season, it’s imperative to adjust your driving style. Doing so goes a long way in helping prevent an accident that can cause damage to your vehicle and a variety of injuries.

Here are five fall driving safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Watch for wet leaves. Wet leaves can be every bit as slippery as ice, so you need to beware of these. If you spot wet leaves on the roadway, drive slowly and steadily. If you brake hard while traveling over wet leaves, there’s a good chance you’ll lose control of your vehicle.
  • Protect against sun glare. Even though the temperature may not be as hot, sun glare is a big problem during the fall season. Protect against this by wearing polarized sunglasses and keeping your windshield clean.
  • Slow down in rainy conditions. When the rain begins to fall, you need to adjust your driving style. This means slowing down, turning on your headlights and paying close attention to any hazards, such as standing water.
  • Watch for deer. Fall season is when deer become more active, which means you’ll be seeing more of them on the roadway. Striking a deer at any speed can damage your vehicle and result in a loss of control.
  • Prepare for time changes. For example, it begins to get darker earlier in the day during the fall months. By the time winter rolls around, it may be dark when you leave the office in the evening. This calls for a different driving style.

When you follow these fall driving safety tips you’ll feel better about your ability to avoid trouble on the road. Even if you follow these tips, there is no guarantee that other drivers will have the foresight to do the same.

If you’re part of a car accident, move to safety and focus on your injuries above all else. Upon receiving treatment, you can then pinpoint the cause of the accident, contact your insurance company and decide how to hold the other person responsible.
