How can I stay safe while using ridesharing?

When you were little, your parents probably told you to never get into a vehicle with a stranger. It seemed like solid advice. You never know a stranger's motive, and once in his or her car, you are pretty helpless. However, with the growth of ridesharing in Connecticut, adults all over are hopping into cars with strangers every day. Even though things have changed, there is still a risk when you get into a stranger's car, even if you ordered it.

Staying safe while using ridesharing is a matter of paying attention and being aware of what is happening. Uber suggests using the tools it provides you to make sure the correct vehicle is picking you up. You can see the driver's photo and license plate number in the app. If they do not match, then do not get in.

You also should never ask the driver if they are your ride. Instead, ask the driver to verify your name. If the driver does not know, then it probably is not your car. You also should always share your plans with others. Let people who care about you know that you are using ridesharing, when and where you are going.

Finally, always listen to your inner voice. If you feel something is not right or do not feel comfortable with a driver, even if it is the correct driver, then do not get into the car. Riding in a car with a stranger will always be a risk, but you can reduce the chances of something bad happening if you follow this advice. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
