Mubarak Soulemane case

A 19-year-old Black college student was shot and killed by a Conn. State Trooper in January 2020, after he had stolen a car and led police on a chase on I-95. The police surrounded the car in West Haven, CT. The doors and windows were closed. When he displayed a knife inside the car, he was shot seven times. The civil lawsuit seeking compensation for the family was settled for an undisclosed amount.

The trooper was prosecuted for manslaughter and acquitted following a criminal trial. It was the first time any law enforcement officer was criminally prosecuted in Conn. for a shooting in 18 years. The civil lawsuit seeking compensation for the family from the West Haven, CT police who participated in the incident is ongoing.
