With summer just around the corner, residents in Connecticut who are planning on hitting the road for a vacation should plan ahead to ensure they and their families are safe when driving. While there is no way to fully control the actions of other drivers, motorists can protect themselves by making sure their vehicles and passengers are properly tended to. This can go a long way toward preventing problems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that one good place to start when preparing for a summer road trip is vehicle maintenance and condition. Scheduling a routine checkup and servicing is wise but even before going in for that service appointment, drivers should check for any recalls that may be ordered for their vehicles. This may allow time for any service needs related to the recall to be addressed at the same time as other service tasks.
In addition to focusing on the road-worthiness of a vehicle, drivers should tend to details that can equip them to handle unforeseen issues on the road. According to the AAA Exchange, drivers should always carry a fully stocked emergency car kit. This kit can include things like flashlights, flares and jumper cables. New batteries are recommended before every trip to make sure flashlights can provide sufficient illumination if needed.
Tire tread and pressure should be checked and tended to and drivers should always fuel up before heading out. Refueling or recharging frequently can help prevent running out of juice in the wrong place or at the wrong time.
